By now, most people are aware that coronary heart disease is linked to 5 basic risk factors -- smoking, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.  But as scientists delve deeper, they are finding an even more complex disease process.  Inflammation and infection in the body are key players in narrowing the arteries, and that "hardening" can cause a heart attack.

Recent findings add another risk to the mix.  If your gums aren't healthy, then your heart may be suffering along with your teeth.  Studies have found that people with gum disease are much more likely to develop heart disease.  The link is not easy to prove, as people who have bad brushing & flossing habits may also tend to eat junk food or smoke, but the link definitely makes sense.  Because gum disease is an infection, and infection causes inflammation, chronic inflammation plays a role in the build-up off fatty plaques that cause hardening of the arteries.

Experts in this field recommend that if you have gum disease and ONE other cardiac risk factor, you should get a medical evaluation.  If you already KNOW you have heart disease, contact your dentist and keep up with your routine hygiene visits.  An improvement in your oral health can help improve your heart health!  Happy Spring everyone!!

It's 2012!  A New Year, a New you.  You may have already made a few resolutions for the year 2012.  Most all of us think about losing weight, exercising more, saving money or stopping a bad habit...like smoking.  This year, why not make one of your resolutions to improve your dental health?  Below find a list of strategies that will go a long way toward giving you a brighter, healthier smile in the coming year.

EAT PLENTY OF FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

Eating well is important for your dental health as well as your whole immune system.  Antioxidents and other nutrients found in fruits, vegetables, and nuts improve your body's ability to fight bacteria and inflammation which will protect your teeth and gums.  Crisp vegetables like apples, carrots and celery help to clean plaque from the teeth and freshen your breath.

QUIT SMOKING OR USING OTHER TOBACCO PRODUCTS

The use of tobacco puts you at risk for tooth discoloration, cavities, gum recession and disease, and throat or lung cancer.  Smokers are about twice as likely to lose their teeth as non-smokers.  The good news is that after you stop smoking your risk of tooth loss will decrease.

LIMIT ALCOHOL INTAKE

According to the Academy of General Dentistry, excessive alcohol intake has the same ill effects as smoking on your gum health.  Studies show that those who regularly consume alcohol are less likely to brush their teeth or be concerned about their basic health.

BRUSH AND FLOSS

The rule of thumb is:  Brush at least twice a day and floss at least once.  Brushing removes plaque, the sticky, colorless film that builds up on your teeth every day.  Flossing removes that very same film from hard to reach areas between the teeth.  Without proper brushing and flossing you can develop gum disease that can affect the rest of the body, so these habits are essential to good overall health.

VISIT YOUR DENTIST FOR REGULAR CHECK-UPS

Regular visits allow your dentist to monitor your oral health and catch minor problems before they become major problems.

For this New Year, resolve to treat your mouth right with better health and hygiene habits.  Your teeth and you body will THANK YOU!

Halloween pumpkins and babies are cute with their gap-toothed grins, but most adults will agree that it is not flattering to have a missing tooth in our smile!  When an accident or disease ends up in tooth loss, there are options for restoring your smile.  You may be a candidate for dental implants if:

You are self-conscious about missing teeth

Wear uncomfortable, ill fitting partial or full dentures

Do not wish to remove intact tooth structure to fabricate a fixed bridge

A dental implant serves as the "root" of the tooth that has been lost.  Implants fuse with the jawbone and provide stable, firm support for a single tooth, bridge, or denture.  They are made of titanium (a strong lightweight metal) and other materials that are accepted by the human body.  They can help to preserve bone  after teeth are lost or extracted.  Implants are a good value, because with careful treatment planning and good oral care, dental implants can provide a healthy, stable smile for a lifetime!  If you have concerns about missing teeth, please call our office for a FREE evaluation.  Dental implants could be the solution you have been waiting for!  Contact us at 856-772-1133 TODAY!
