GINGIVITIS: DO YOU HAVE IT?

Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease which can be treated and reversed if diagnosed early.  If treatment is not received gingivitis could progress into periodontitis, an advanced and more serious stage of gum disease which includes bone loss and is not reversible.

It is rare for a dental professional to practice a full day and not see at least one case of gingivitis. Red, swollen, and bleeding gums are the signs of gingivitis.  Proper daily home care and frequent professional dental cleanings help to keep gingivitis in check.  Symptoms may at any point appear or return when a patients home care regimen begins to slack.  Bacterial biofilm and plaque must continually be reduced daily to a level with which a patient's immune system can cope.  Failure to reverse gingivitis may lead to periodontitis, requiring a lifetime of disease management.

Be aware of what's going on in your mouth and be proactive to achieve ideal gingival health.  Visit a dental professional at least twice a year.  Using floss, power toothbrushes, gum picks, fluoride gels, and antimicrobial mouth rinses can increase the predictability of your success!
